The Newman University student-run newspaper, The Vantage, and several of its staff members have drawn praise and professional rewards over the past year.

The Vantage received 24 awards at the Kansas Collegiate Media Conference in April 2016, including a silver medal in the Overall category. Several Vantage writers and editors have since put their skills to use for other news outlets.

Sophomore Vantage staff writer Kevin Clack spent the past summer interning for his hometown newspaper, the Seguin Daily News in Seguin, Texas. Junior staff member Delaney Hiegert, who won eight KCM awards and is now The Vantage editor-in-chief, was also selected for internships – an unpaid position at The Wichita Eagle over Christmas break and a paid internship at her hometown newspaper, The Topeka Capital-Journal, over the past summer.

Hiegert wrote several bylined feature stories for the Eagle, including one about social media for pets that was picked up by the Associated Press and distributed to papers in multiple states across America, as well as in China, Malaysia and New Zealand.

Current staff members aren’t the only ones to find employment with professional newspapers. Former Vantage Editor-in-Chief Matt Riedl, a 2015 graduate, has worked as a reporter for The Wichita Eagle since halfway through his senior year at Newman.
