Newman Athletics welcomed two new coaches to its roster over the past year

Women’s Soccer

Dylan Gruntzel

Dylan Gruntzel is a first-year NCAA DII head coach for the women’s soccer team. He returned to Newman after two seasons leading Bethany College’s program. Gruntzel was previously an assistant at Newman for four seasons, which featured some of the school’s top win-loss records in the school’s NCAA history. 

Gruntzel also led Wichita East to more than 100 wins from 2012-2019 and was a three-time Greater Wichita Athletic League coach of the year. Earlier this year, the Jets leader earned his master’s in Soccer coaching from The Ohio University.

Volleyball

Last spring Newman named Marisa Compton its seventh head women’s volleyball coach in the DII era.

Coach Compton came to the university from Neosho County Community College where she served as head coach for two seasons, which included a NJCAA DII National Tournament appearance for the first time in program history.

She also held the top post at Labette Community College for three years. She served as an assistant coach at Neosho and Fort Scott, and as a student assistant for Austin Peay State University where she also played for three years.
