Academic Awards Recognize Student Excellence
Each year, the Schools of Arts and Sciences, Business and Technology, Education and Social Work, Healthcare Professions and Catholic Studies recognizes several students for their exceptional academics, service and leadership. The winners of these awards are announced at the annual Academic Awards Convocation.
“Students are sprinting toward several finish lines — completing term papers, passing final exams, planning for graduation, selecting graduate schools, seeking new jobs and even organizing weddings,” President Kathleen Jagger said. “It is time we reflect on and honor students for a joyous year of academic achievements.”
The St. Catherine’s Medal, which is one of the most prestigious undergraduate student awards at Newman, was also awarded and recognizes the contributions of a student to the university and the larger community.
This year’s recipient was unable to attend the ceremony, but this didn’t stop the Academic Awards committee from surprising first-generation student Lindsay Espinosa-Pablo.
“There was a big list of nominees, so I’m very shocked,” she said. “I just know there are so many students who have achieved great things, so I didn’t think I would be the one they chose. I’m just proud and shocked.”
The Ablah Awards nominees were recognized during the ceremony and announced later at Newman’s commencement on May 12. The 2023 female nominees were Lauren Esfeld, Marissa Freshour, Emily Maddux, Talia Powers and Michelle Tong. The male nominees were Marcus Lines, Ian Lee, Minh Nguyen, Austin Schwartz and Garrett VanDeventer.
