Student athletes go for the gold

Newman student-athletes consistently break personal records, make school history and are recognized for their prowess as Newman Jets.

Softball junior Hayley Bonython from Adelaide, Australia, was crowned Female Athlete of the Year for hitting a .370 batting average with 41 RBI and 33 runs.

Junior Stevie Strong from Kansas City was named Male Athlete of the Year for leading the Jets men’s basketball team in scoring (14.8 points per game) and assists (100 for the season).

The Newman University women’s bowling team competed at its second ever Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) tournament in March and made it to the championship round against Maryville University. Newman was also honored with the GLVC James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Team Award.

Golfer Chase Martel took first place at the Konzem-Capra Invitational in March, becoming Newman University’s first No. 1 overall finisher at a tournament since the university joined Division II.
