’80 Thomas Stolz was named director of public safety/assistant county manager for Sedgwick County.

’88 Donette Alonzo received a doctorate degree from the University of Missouri Kansas City in May 2016.

’93 Diana Kranz retired from teaching elementary school at Haven, Kan., grade school after 23 years.

’93 Sheila Landis is an assistant professor of nursing at Bethel College, North Newton, Kan.

’95 Rick Heiser joined North Arkansas Regional Medical Center, Harrison, Ark., as director of outpatient rehabilitation and sports medicine.

’99 Becky (Jellison) Luerman received the Ashland (Kan.) Distinguished Teacher Award on May 21, 2016.

’00 Todd Martz, Ph.D., was awarded tenure in the chemistry department of Scripps Oceanographic Institute, San Diego, Calif.

Association.

’01 Regina (Srajer) Phipps is an e-communications specialist at American Association of Petroleum Geologists, Broken Arrow, Okla.

’03 Jamie (Harrison) Taulbee is chief retail officer at Meritrust Credit Union, Wichita, Kan. She will maintain her previous responsibilities as vice president in marketing/sales initiatives and corporate communication.

’03 Matthew Olson joined Stinson, Lasswell & Wilson as a member, after working for the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office.

’04 Eva Harmon is principal of Sacred Heart Catholic School in Arkansas City, Kan.

’04 Rebecca Sandoval-Kennedy is a district social worker for USD 308 and is owner- operator of Complete Circle Counseling & Coaching, Hutchinson, Kan.

’07 Jennifer (Davis) Pickler is a social studies teacher in USD 259 in Wichita, Kan.

’08 Daniel Bryan has resigned from Bishop Kelly High School in Tulsa, Okla., to enter the seminary for the Diocese of Tulsa. Daniel is completing his term on the Newman National Alumni Board.

’08 Matt Smith is the junior/senior principal at Rawlins County USD 105 (Kan.) high school.

’10 ’12 Georgia (Wiggins) Drewes is the assistant director of admissions at Newman University.

’11 Amanda (Harris) Pavlovich is a social studies teacher in USD 259 in Wichita, Kan.

’11 Tyler Nordman is athletic director at Highland Community College, Highland, Kan.

’11 Melissa Winter Gillenwater is a 2016 recipient of the St. Philippine Duchesne Award for outstanding young elementary school teacher from the Wichita Catholic Diocese. Melissa teaches at Christ the King Catholic School in Wichita, Kan.

’12 Heather (Ranney) Pianalto, math instructor at Southwest College, Winfield, Kan., heads the Quantitative Literacy Center at Southwest, which offers tutoring services to students.

’13 Peter Abella is an admissions counselor at the University of South Carolina, Columbia, S.C.

’13 Yaney Rocha received her juris doctor degree from De Paul University School of Law in May 2016.

’14 Danielle Cobb is a nurse in the CVICU as part of the heart institute at St. Luke’s Medical Center, Kansas City, Mo.

’14 Michael Linthicum is the new health care pastor at Woodworth Healthcare of Parsons, Kan.

Vimala Pillari, former dean of the School of Social Work at Newman, has been named the first dean of the College of Health Sciences and Human Services at Tarleton State University, Stephenville, Texas.

OBITUARIES

Mike Chance, president of Chance Rides Manufacturing, Inc., on April 19, 2016. His mother, Marjorie “Marj” Chance, played a key role in starting the nursing program at Newman University.

Marguerite “Marge” Finn, on March 22, 2016. Marge was the wife of former Newman University Board Member John Finn.

John J. Murphy, Ph.D., on Jan. 18, 2016. John was an adjunct professor who taught in the Newman University MBA program for several years.

’49, ’58 Jeanne Lobmeyer Cardenas, on April 24, 2016, from Parkinson’s disease. Baptized Alfrieda Theresa Lohmeyer, she taught 32 years at Newman and was named professor emerita of English and Communication. Jeanne was an Adorer (she took the name Sister Mary Jeanne) from 1951 to 1969, wife of Michael Pena Cardenas for 41 years, author, painter, photographer, quilter, creator of the Newman Vantage and feature writer for The Wichita Eagle/Beacon. She received the 1971 Kansas Press Women Sweepstakes Award, the 1993 Newman Faculty

Emeritus Award and the 1995 St. Maria De Mattias Award. She wrote and was the voice for the “Sunday With Sisters” radio program and created “For Women Only,” a way for women to re-enter college. Memorials to St. Patrick Catholic Church, Wichita, Kan. or Gentiva Hospice.

Jerry Johnston, former owner of Johnston’s Clothiers, on March 21, 2016. Jerry was the father of Newman Vice President for University Advancement ’82 J.V. Judith Coombs Schreiber, Ph.D., on Sept. 21, 2016. Schreiber was a chemistry professor at Newman in the 1970s. She resided in Estes Park, Colo., near her daughter Ann and family.
