Each year, Newman faculty and staff members publish and present a variety of literary, scholarly and professional works. Here is a sample of recent activity and other achievements.

Jessica Bird, assistant dean for nontraditional outreach programs:

Filled the vacant higher education administrator position on the Kansas State Department of Education Accreditation Advisory Council.

John Burke, Ph.D., assistant professor of education:

Selected by the KSDE to participate in the School Leadership Series standard setting being conducted by Educational Testing Service.

Audrey Hane, Ph.D., professor of communications:

Presented “Managing Energy: Strategies for Boosting Work Effectiveness and Enjoyment” at the Know Your Worth women’s leadership conference, Sept. 29.

Larry Heck, Ph.D., professor of sociology and assistant undergraduate dean:

Began a second three-year term as president of the Pi Gamma Mu board of Trustees in November.

Gina Marx, Ed.D., associate professor  of education and director of graduate education:

Served on the KSDE accreditation team for Haviland College, fall 2017.

Presented “Coaching Hope” to Emporia schools, fall 2017.

Serving as president for the ICF International Coach Federation Heartland Chapter for KS/MO for 2018.

Kelly McFall, Ph.D., professor of history:

Presented at the National Collegiate Honors Council conference on two panels: Games Based Inquiry of Core Texts:  Reacting to the Past and Honors in the Time of State Budget Cuts.

Became chair of the board of Alternative Gifts International.

Joined the Reacting Consortium board (the national organization for Reacting to the Past).

Myra Pfannenstiel, director of financial aid:

Elected to the position of president-elect for the Rocky Mountain Association of Financial Aid Administrators.

Laura Scholl, M.S.V.S., assistant professor of graphic design and digital art:

Participated in the IBM/AIGA Design Thinking Summit in New York City, July 13-14.

Amy Siple, M.S.N., associate professor of nursing:

Presented ABCs in managing behaviors associated with dementia at Grissell Memorial Hospital in Ransom, Kansas.

Invited to join the American Association of Nurse Practitioners Leadership Council.

Devin Smith, graduate assistantship – diversity:

Collegiate Impact Award winner of the annual Dreamchasers Award presented by Wichita Urban Professionals.

Erin Weber, adjunct professor of history:

Interview with Robert Rodriguez and Richard Buskin, Something about the Beatles podcast. “The Beatles and the Historians” Episode 116, Interview date, July 26: Broadcast date, July 31.

Led “The Beatles Story,” a four-hour class held at the Wichita State Community Education Center,
Sept. 12-19.

Teresa Wilkerson, M.A., assistant dean of adult studies:

Kickoff speaker at “Business Pitching: Knowing the Essentials to Grab Attention” event held at Wichita State University.

Deanne Zogleman, instructor and director of the music department: 

Received the Mary J. Teall Outstanding Lead Actress in a Musical award for the portrayal of Francesca Johnson in “The Bridges of Madison County.”
