From the President

Dear friends,

At Newman University, we firmly believe that you learn best where you feel a sense of belonging. This principle is the heart of our unique and supportive educational environment, touching the lives of thousands of students across our nine-decade history.

One shining example of this principle in practice is our Honors Program, now 17 years old, which we highlight in this issue of Newman Magazine in the featured story section. It is evident by the program’s growth and its ability to attract bright, intellectually curious minds from diverse backgrounds. Our Honors students, past and present, embody this philosophy, finding their place in a community that challenges and supports them in equal measure.

Now in my fifth year as president, I have witnessed a genuine commitment to fostering a sense of belonging campus-wide. From our innovative programs led by expert professors who take pride in mentoring students to our broader community-building initiatives, we strive to create a place where everyone can feel at home, regardless of age, personal experience or future dreams.

This sense of belonging is more than just a comfort — it is a catalyst for growth. In our nurturing environment, students develop confidence, realize their potential and graduate ready to make a difference in their chosen fields and in their communities. Whether through our Newman Honors Program, athletics, fine arts, internships, service projects or leadership opportunities, our students create or find their place and learn to thrive.

I am particularly inspired by our Multicultural Leadership Organization, whose student members collaborate and host a vibrant Wichita community event each spring that brings diverse groups to campus to celebrate cultures through food, dance, music and other artistic performances. Their work, along with our Campus Ministry and Metanoia Catholic living community programs, illustrate how students embrace, live and enhance a sense of belonging that can extend far beyond our university walls.

As you explore this issue, I invite you to reflect on your own journey of belonging. At Newman, we do not overlook this essential human need. Instead, we cultivate it, knowing that when students feel emotionally supported and connected, they are capable of achieving remarkable personal and professional success.

As a Catholic university, we are open to all and aim to help everyone discover their calling and their passion. Here, you are not just part of a university; you are part of a family that believes in your ability to change the world.

Joyfully yours,

President Kathleen Jagger, Ph.D.
