For Isabel Porres ‘25, love was her biggest takeaway from Newman University.

“From the professors and chaplains to the seminarians, people in Metanoia and the broader campus, I’ve met and come to love lots of really good people,” Porres said. “That is the summary of Newman — a lesson in love and the realization that life is a gift.”

Porres was involved in the Honors Program, Campus Ministry and lived in Metanoia, Newman’s Catholic living community, for three years. These communities deepened both her faith and love for learning, so much so that a course titled Food and Faith shifted her path from nursing to theology.

“I was presented with the reality that God is in everything, even — and especially — in every little thing that we eat,” Porres said.

Now, as she pursues a master’s degree in counseling through Divine Mercy University’s hybrid program, Porres is staying in Wichita, a city she’s come to love. She’ll also expand her work at The Lord’s Diner.

“Getting to know and fall in love with God has been the greatest gift,” Porres said. “And the proper response to a gift is gratitude by being in relationship with him and praying without ceasing.”
