Letter from President Kathleen Jagger
Dear Newman Friends,
Innovation isn’t just a buzzword at Newman University — it’s woven into the very fabric of who we are and who we’re becoming. Our vision statement speaks boldly of our “commitment to innovation and excellence,” and this isn’t mere aspiration. It’s our formula for resilience in an ever-changing world.
When I think about innovation at Newman, I see it as our commitment to adapt and evolve while staying true to our Catholic identity and core values. We’re not changing for change’s sake, but rather embracing the entrepreneurial spirit needed to better serve our students and live our mission more fully. From our groundbreaking Pathmaker program to our distinctive spiritual companions initiative, from our Student Success Center to our expansion into southwest Kansas, we’re pioneering new ways to meet needs and create opportunities.
What excites me most is that innovation at Newman isn’t top-down — it emerges organically from every corner of our community. Students, faculty and staff are empowered to share ideas and try new approaches. We’re building a culture where experimentation is welcomed, knowing that some ideas will soar while others teach us valuable lessons.
As we prepare students for careers that don’t yet exist, we focus on developing essential skills: critical thinking, communication, adaptability, leadership and the confidence to make connections across disciplines. Our liberal arts foundation, enhanced by today’s technologies, ensures our graduates are ready for whatever the future holds.
I’m excited for you to dive into this issue of the Newman University Magazine, where you will certainly learn about many innovative initiatives as we strive to meet the challenges facing higher education. You will also enjoy reading about students, alumni and members of our community who are making a difference, redefining excellence and transforming society. Additionally, I hope you will be able to catch up with old friends in the sections featuring class, faculty and staff notes.
Thank you for taking time to learn more about Newman University!
May Saints Maria de Mattias and John Henry Newman pray for you and your family; and may the Providence of God provide for us all.
With gratitude,
Kathleen S. Jagger, Ph.D., MPH
