Reaching new altitudes in athletics

Newman University’s athletics flew high in the 2024-25 athletic season, with student-athletes delivering great performances across every sport. From individual accolades to all-around team triumphs, this year’s accomplishments reflect the discipline, drive and attitude that define Newman athletics. Here are some of the names and moments that made last season one for the history books.

Bowling coach Billy Murphy received the Gordon Teigen Service Award, while both the men’s and women’s bowling teams qualified for nationals in Las Vegas. The Lady Jets took eighth place in the overall competition. Both Liam Hardman and Ashley Soto earned a spot on the National Collegiate Bowling Coaches Association All-Rookie Team, while Hardman also earned All-American Honorable Mention.

On the pitch, four Jets earned Division II Conference Commissioners Association Men’s Soccer All-Central Region honors: Alberto Romano, Caio Tascheto, Gabriel Dias Juliani and his brother, Gustavo Dias Juliani. Romano and Gustavo also made the All-Great American Conference (GAC) team and played large roles in men’s soccer making it to the conference tournament.

Golf standout Charlie Townsend was selected to the All-Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) team. Townsend earned his highest individual score, placing second at the Tiger Classic.

Jace Fisher became the latest All-American from Newman’s wrestling program with a sixth place finish at nationals. This was Fisher’s second time qualifying for nationals in his collegiate career.

In total, 16 Jets made the All-MIAA team, 15 athletes made the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District team, four female bowlers were recognized on the All-Great Lakes Valley Conference Team and nine soccer players received All-GAC honors.
