The first of a multi-phased effort to re-imagine and revitalize Sacred Heart Hall, Newman University’s historic centerpiece, is underway.
Thanks to some early success in the Honoring Our Legacy, Building Our Future fundraising initiative, Newman’s iconic 100-year-old building is receiving much needed upgrades this year.
The first phase of the Sacred Heart Hall renovation focuses on replacing all 237 windows to help it reclaim energy efficiency. The contractor for the project is Simpson Construction Services, owned by alumnus Bob Simpson ‘83, a former St. Newman medal winner. His wife, Anne, is also a Newman alumna.
The $2 million window installation project is currently underway with completion expected by the end of 2024.
The initial phase began thanks in great part to a $1 million gift from the Adorers of the Blood of Christ (ASC), the university’s sponsors. The ASC gift, combined with Newman fundraising and matching American Rescue Plan Act federal funds, covers all window and installation costs and allows the university to focus on fundraising for other elements of the project.
President Kathleen S. Jagger, Ph.D., MPH, is grateful for the Adorers’ support. “The sisters’ generosity is a testament to their enduring spirit and a commitment to Newman’s mission to transform society through an education that calls graduates to serve others.”
Additional major gift commitments, yet to be announced, will pave the way for future phases of re-imagining Sacred Heart, including new entrances on the east and west sides of the building, new learning and social spaces and improved accessibility.
Vice President of Advancement Bob Beumer added, “This project shows what we can achieve with a shared vision. Restoring Sacred Heart Hall honors our past and paves the way for a vibrant future.”
