For some students, college is all about academics and studying hard to make good grades. For others, it’s about getting involved in activities on campus or helping others in the community. For still others, it can be about sports and giving your all to be the best athlete you can be.
When Associate Professor of Nursing Amy Siple learned that several children in Wichita needed glasses but couldn’t afford them, she began looking for people who had the ability to meet that need.
In each of the five writing or learning centers with which I have worked closely, many tutors, students, and teachers alike have made this comment: We should change the name of this place. Here at Newman, many have suggested changing the name of the Math and Writing Center to something more accurately descriptive, like The Study Place or The Center for Student Learning.
Drew Bogner, Ph.D. graduated from Kansas Newman College in 1979, returned to Newman as a faculty member in 1987, and served as provost from 1991 to 2000. He is now president of Molloy College in Rockville Centre, N.Y., and has served as chair of the NCAA Division II Presidents Council since 2009. To say that the landscape of the Newman University women’s basketball program has changed would be an understatement. A new coach, new players, and a new attitude have turned heads — locally, in the Heartland Conference, and at the national level.
The Newman University Athletics Department has enthusiastically adopted the NCAA Division II “Life in the Balance” initiative to help students have a well-rounded collegiate experience (see story, page 6). Here is a quick look at a few Newman student-athletes living a life of balance on and off the court.
Some brothers do a lot of things together. Then there are the Gallaghers. “Brothers in blood, brothers in arms,” is how Joseph and Patrick Gallagher describe their relationship. That’s because they grew up together in Wichita and then served their country together, each completing two tours of duty in Iraq in the Marine Corps. They were even stationed together for a short time upon returning home. Now, they study together, with Joe pursuing a degree in radiologic technology and Patrick working on a degree in communication at Newman University.
